Meet Bobby.

Bobby is an Assistant Project Manager with the Construction team. He has been playing the drums since he was fourteen years old and is totally obsessed with music. Learn more about his Hot Topic journey!

How long have you worked for Hot Topic?

Just about 3 years now. I started with Hot Topic as one of the mail guys. I worked in the mail room. Basically, I had a passion for music. I worked for a record label before working here. I knew I wanted to be a part of a company that was musically influenced. I thought you know what, I have some administrative experience in my past so I’ll try to get my foot in the door. The only thing that I saw on the website was that there was an office service position. So I applied for it, interviewed, and got the job. And then from there kind of had taken a new path in my career with some of the opportunities that were opening up around the company. I’m now an associate project manager, so I think the progress of starting in the mail room to now being management, is a huge bonus. The progression is pretty awesome.

So that kind of answers my next question as well, which is what got you interested in working for Hot Topic. For you, it was the music.

Yeah for sure. I had bought band tees at hot topic many times before I thought I would be working for them.

What would you say is the biggest thing you’ve learned here?

My biggest learning experience is to be able to communicate effectively. I think the way this company works and the way it should operate is that communication is key. Being open minded to new ideas and not limiting yourself.

Describe working at Hot Topic in three words.

Three words to describe working at Hot Topic… That’s a tough one. I could come up with some smart ass three word phrase, but I’m trying to come up with good words instead! I would say passion, ambition, and integrity.

At Hot Topic, we’re all about what you’re totally obsessed with. Whether it’s TV, movies, comics, or music, what are you totally obsessed with?

I am totally obsessed with music, no question. I have a little blog and I write about artists. I play the drums in a band. Music has always been a big part of my life since I can remember. I got my first drum set when I was 14 years old and at the time, I was living with my mom and three older brothers. We didn’t have a lot of money and we shared a room – it was just a room and beds. So my uncle came over with a used drum set and I was the only one home. He asked me, “Hey you want a drum set?” and I said, “Yeah I want a drum set!” He’se like well we got to figure out a palce to put it, there’s no room. And I thought, I’m going to throw out my bed so I can put the drum set right here in my room. So that’s what I did, I took my bed down to the dumpster of the apartment complex and set up my drum set and slept on the floor next to my drum set. And that’s how I started playing music.

Marvel or DC?

Marvel. Wolverine has always been my favorite superhero. I’m also a comic book collector – growing up it was always Marvel, Marvel, Marvel. The only DC I ever got into was the Death of Superman. It sounds so morbid but it was such a big thing when it came out. But I’m definitely a Marvel guy.

Doctor Who or Sherlock?

I like Sherlock Holmes the movie with RDJ, does that count?

Of the licenses we carry, which is your favorite?

Marvel! It’s funny to say, but my son is two and he’s into the Disney movies. So some of the Disney stuff is pretty cool.

If you could have any kind of tail, what kind of tail would you have and why?

Does it have to be an existing animal? Because I think it would be pretty cool to have the tail of a stegosaurus.

What is most your played song on iTunes/Spotify/Soundcloud/etc.?

I think right now it’s Deftones, and the song I am probably listening to the most right now by them is Engine Number 9, the Adrenaline album, one of their first.

What’s one piece of advice you have for anyone who wants to work at Hot Topic?

Go for it! I think it’s a great company to work for and the opportunities are awesome if you work hard. For me it was just getting my foot in the door and the vertical potential was there as soon as I did. I think if you’re thinking about applying, just don’t hesitate and do it.
